MISSION
STATEMENT
"P.A.L.H.S.
is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance and
reliable information through sharing knowledge, experiences and ideas for those
that enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of keeping Arowana, Lou Han (Flowerhorn)
and other types of freshwater and marine fishes. It is also the objective of
P.A.L.H.S. to encourage, aid, and spread the enjoyment of the aquarium hobby
in the Philippines."
HISTORY
"For
years, Filipino aquarium hobbyists have been searching for help in the fascinating
but sometimes troublesome world of fish keeping. In a country blessed with rich
thriving coral reefs that most countries would envy, it seems ironic for the
Philippines to be lagging behind its neighboring countries in the appreciation
and knowledge of aquarium systems.
This
lead to a number of Filipino Arowana hobbyists to search for answers and the
Internet has become the primary source of providing such information. In 2000,
the year of the Dragon, a new web site based in Singapore dedicated to the Dragon
Fish, Arowana was launched. For a time, it sufficed the eagerness for reliable
information but soon the language barrier and the distinct difference in location
became awkward. The colloquialism more commonly used in the forum of the web
site was becoming much harder to follow and Filipinos were finding it difficult
to relate to the local fish stores available to other Asian countries. The local
fish stores in the Philippines are not as complete, experienced and broad in
terms of knowledge and understanding of Asian Arowanas as compared to foreign
LFS. This soon became the primary motive for these Filipino hobbyists who met
through the Singaporean based web site to organize their own society.
As
a result, in May of 2002, this group of Filipino Arowana hobbyists embarked
on their very own web site and initially called themselves the Philippine Arowana
Society or P.A.S. It was also at this time when the Flowerhorn, the new hybrid
cichlid from Malaysia was beginning to become popular in the Philippines. The
fascination and interest to know more about the Flower Horn persuaded the group
to incorporate its Chinese name, Luo Han, to the name of the society. In July
of 2002, the forum of the web site was launched and on August 18, 2002, fourteen
(14) men and women completed the first Grand EB (Eye Ball) that was held in
Quezon City. This also marked the day the Philippine Arowana and Luo Han Society
or P.A.L.H.S. was established. "
